Los Angeles (AFP) – The Carolina Panthers of the American Football League (NFL) announced on Thursday the return of their former star Cam Newton, who had been without a team since August, to replace the injured Sam Darnold.
Newton, the 2015 league MVP (Most Valuable Player), has not played a game this season after he was fired by the New England Patriots in late August.
“The Panthers agreed on the terms with quarterback Cam Newton on Thursday,” the franchise said only about the contract, which is pending a physical review of the quarterback.
Newton, 32, was chosen by the Panthers with the number one in the 2011 Draft and in 2015 he led the team to the Super Bowl, in which they lost to the Denver Broncos.
However, his career suffered a slump in recent seasons, weighed down by numerous injuries, and the Panthers ended up releasing him in 2020.
The ‘quarterback’ tried to rebuild his career by signing a one-season contract with the Patriots as a replacement for the legendary Tom Brady.
After a disappointing season out of the playoffs, coach Bill Belichick let Newton go in August to make room for rookie Mac Jones, his future quarterback.
Back in Carolina, Newton will have the mission of relieving Sam Darnold, who will be out for four to six weeks due to a shoulder injury suffered on Sunday.
The Panthers occupy the last position of the South division of the National Conference with four victories and five losses.
