Calzada de San Diego: how is the famous pedestrian promenade in Morelia – El Sol de Zamora

Morelia, Michoacán (OEM-Infomex).- One of the most beautiful corners of Morelia is the Calzada Fray Antonio de San Miguel, which in addition to being historical has also been the setting for television, as years ago with the novel “Loving you is my sin ”, a story in which Yadhira Carrillo, Sergio Sendel, Tiaré Scanda and Sylvia Pasquel, among other actors, showed part of the beauty of the city to the world, as well as the well-known Casa de la Calzada, now transformed into the UNAM Cultural Center .

Beyond that, this pedestrian promenade popularly known as San Diego, connects the visitor from the Fuente de Las Tarascas to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where every December as part of the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, thousands of believers travel to visit the “mother of all Mexicans”, sing her Las Mañanitas and pay her bills.

But that month is not the only one in which it has a wide activity, since the road has taken a cultural turn. The artists have appropriated this space, since the creatives through music have increased the atmosphere full of romanticism that the road offers to engaged couples, husbands, or even fifteen-year-olds who select this point to take photos.

In addition to music, cultural activities such as painting workshops have also been developed, where on weekends Morelians and visitors experience art in public spaces.

It is with these actions that it has recently been called the Causeway of the Arts, since this cultural life has permeated citizens of all ages.

Its history is very important for the city, since it was built in 1732 by Bishop Don Manuel José Escalona y Calatayud, and it was restored by his successor Fray Antonio de San Miguel, from whom it took its name.

Although most of the buildings that are around it now function as educational and cultural centers that attract the new generations, being historical buildings built as resting places in the 18th and 19th centuries, these large houses also house fantastic, real stories. and legends.

The most popular is the “Hand on the fence” that takes place in the now UNAM Cultural Center, where it is stated at midnight, the hand of a young woman extends through one of its windows that are located at the level of the quarry to ask food.

This and many more historical, social and cultural elements are part of daily life on Calzada Fray Antonio de San Miguel or Calzada de las Artes.
