Says “some issues” about past labor reforms should be corrected but advocates “looking to the future”
MADRID, 19 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Second Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, has assured that the problem of the Spanish labor market does not come from now on one labor reform or another, but that for a long time Spain has dragged rates of structural unemployment and of youth unemployment much higher than the rest of European countries, as well as very high levels of temporary employment.
In this sense, the minister believes that “some issues” about past labor reforms should be corrected, but advocates “looking to the future” and ensuring a framework that allows creating quality employment.
This was stated by Calviño this Wednesday at the 43rd Confederal Congress of the UGT this Wednesday in which he participated together with the fourth vice president and Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera.
Calviño has assured that the Government’s intention in terms of employment is not only to counteract the negative effects of the pandemic, but also to fix the imbalances of decades ago.
On this, he remarked that the way out of the crisis “cannot be more precariousness and inequality”, but rather a model with better wages and jobs, more productivity, in a context marked by a process of transformation “which is inevitable”.
“That there are poor workers is insane,” agreed the fourth vice president, Teresa Ribera.
Calviño has assured that a “new” phase is now opening, leaving behind these hard months and facing a recovery that does not have to be a mere rebound, but rather that the country must be more sustainable from the economic and environmental point of view. and social, as well as fairer.
In the case of the just transition, Ribera has regretted that it has not been taken seriously before, defending that his Ministry has worked from the “first day” to address this issue. In this sense, he pointed out that May 25 is the date on which Spain has consumed all the resources it is capable of generating over the course of a year, therefore the rest of the period the country lives with “debt and future mortgage “.
For this, he highlighted the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan with which the Government intends to mobilize the 140,000 million corresponding to European funds until 2026 to start the process of transformation and modernization of the country.
PEPE ÁLVAREZ THANKS THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE RECOVERY PLAN
During the debate, the Secretary General of the UGT, Pepe Álvarez, thanked the current Government for having developed “in such a short time” a Recovery Plan “so broad with such a vision for the future”, beyond the plan of the unions.
In this sense, Álvarez has advanced that tomorrow the UGT Congress will approve an appeal to the political forces and to society as a whole to reach understandings and “take advantage of the opportunity that opens up in Spain.”
