Good news for lovers of Calvin & Hobbes : the masterpiece of Bill Watterson will soon be entitled to a complete reissue in pocket format. The editions Hors Collection announced the release of a first volume presented under the title “The Little Collection” in 15 by 23 centimeters, available from this month. Ultimately, the format is not that different from a previous experiment carried out by this same house on the series of Watterson : for a time, this had already been entitled to volumes in small formats of 17 by 22 centimeters. But this initiative already dates back more than ten years, and it was high time to offer an updated version to allow this cult comic book to remain accessible.
Calvin & Hobbes Nomad
A true institution in the world of American comics and comic strips, Calvin & Hobbes describes the daily life of a young boy and his stuffed tiger, an imaginary friend with whom the hero imagines himself experiencing a number of extraordinary adventures. Considered the direct heir of the tenors of the repertoire (Snoopy, Krazy Kat), the series has often been cited in the list of the best productions intended for young people in the comics industry, for its ability to capture the fanciful and creative spirit of children, but also for its philosophical quality: several academicians will have focused on the work of Bill Watterson to the point of considering the project as an authentic treatise on society and morality packaged in a light title aimed at young people.
The editions Hors Collection took the time to present this new initiative, providing some details on the format: the releases will be produced in the spirit of a box set with two volumes for each new batch, i.e. a set of seven boxes in total. The first group shot will start at the beginning, with the episodes of Calvin & Hobbes published between 1985 and 1987.
“Is there still a need to present Calvin and Hobbes and its brilliant designer Bill Watterson? A fabulous best-seller, the series is one of the rare recent creations to have become a comic book classic. We follow the adventures of Calvin, little rambunctious 6-year-old boy, and his faithful stuffed tiger Hobbes, together they have no equal when it comes to complicating the lives of the people around them. The parents, the daughters, the school teacher… everyone goes through it! Gladly caustic and always very fair, Bill Watterson’s humor spares no one, nor society and its failings. It’s well known: the truth comes from the mouths of children!
This box set of two books is the first in a series of seven, for a complete book in a new compact, Italian-style format, faithful to the original composition. It brings together comic strips originally published from November 1985 to March 1987.”
The project is currently available for pre-order and will debut in bookstores this Thursday, November 7, 2024.
