Calls for Resignation of Sri Mulyani and Basuki From Cabinet: Faisal Basri Urges Public to Act

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Senior economist Faisal Basri spoke about calls for the resignation of Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono from the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet led by President Joko Widodo.

Faisal emphasized that he did not directly persuade Sri Mulyani or Basuki to resign from the cabinet.

Instead, he urged and voiced that the public should also urge the ministers to resign.

“I’m not (not pressing directly). I disclaimer, I’m not directly related to those I mentioned. So I’m also keeping my distance,” said Faisal on the sidelines of the Kamisan Action opposite the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Thursday (18/1/ 2024).

“But, I know Mrs. Sri Mulyani who has integrity and I think 99 percent of her is worried. So the seeds are already visible,” he said.

According to Faisal, currently the ministers, including Sri Mulyani, are calculating the various impacts if they resign.

Faisal also stated that he had not heard directly the resignation statement from Sri Mulyani or Basuki.

He suspects that the ministers are still waiting for the right moment to resign.

“Therefore, let’s continue to vote, friends, continue to vote (to resign). Because this is a moral struggle. And this is the most peaceful. It doesn’t involve burning, it’s not anarchic like that,” he added.

Previously, Faisal Basri made a call for ministers to resign following his expression of disappointment with the policies of President Jokowi’s government which were deemed not to be neutral in the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres).

In that appeal, Faisal mentioned the names Sri Mulyani, Pramono Anung and Basuki Hadimuljono.

“Come on, let’s persuade Mrs. Sri Mulyani (Minister of Finance), Mr. Basuki (Minister of PUPR), and several other ministers to resign. That will have a powerful effect. Morally, I heard that Mrs. Sri Mulyani is most ready to resign. Pramono Anung (Secretary “The Cabinet) is stuttering. The PDI (PDI Perjuangan) continues to defend Jokowi, it’s dizzy,” claimed Faisal in the Political Economic Outlook 2024 in Tebet, South Jakarta, Saturday (13/1/2024) as quoted from Tribunnews.

Meanwhile, the President’s Special Staff Coordinator, Ari Dwipayana, responded to calls for ministers in the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet led by President Joko Widodo to resign.

According to Ari, currently all ministers remain united and solid in helping the President.

“All the Ministers of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet remain united and solid in helping the President to lead the administration of the government until the end of his term of office,” said Ari in a written statement on Thursday.

“Regarding the issue that has been deliberately raised by several parties that there are ministers who are ready to resign or are uncomfortable in government, just ask the parties who are raising this issue,” he added.
