Ten people were injured by the perpetrator and even more due to the chaos that occurred, then the perpetrator opened a smoke bomb and started firing at several people on the train and on the platform.

The police in New York are now going out with the name and picture of a person they want to get in touch with. The man is said to have rented a car that they believe is connected to the incident. The car was allegedly rented in Philadelphia the day before the shooting, and was found in Brooklyn.

– We want to find out if this man has any connection to what happened on the subway, says NYPD investigation chief James Essig.

Asked by the press, he emphasizes that the police have not yet arrested anyone.

They ask witnesses and people in the area for tips, and promise a bounty of $ 50,000 for information.

Not life-threateningly injured

Five of those shot should be seriously injured, but no one should be in danger of losing their lives. A total of at least 29 people have been treated in hospital for gunshot wounds, smoke injuries or other injuries they sustained during the incident.

At the police press conference, they say that the perpetrator used a handgun and fired 33 times.

According to the police, the man wore a gas mask to protect himself from the smoke and was wearing a neon orange vest and gray sweater.

There are surveillance cameras at the metro station, but several of these must have been out of order.

– It is also something we are investigating now, what is the reason for this, says Essig.

New York Mayor Eric Adams says he will do everything in his power to hold the perpetrator accountable.

– A tough day for New York

New York City Mayor Eric Adams attended the video conference via video link.

– This is a tough day for New York. I will do everything in my power to stop acts of violence like this, he says.

Adams also points out that there have been a number of shootings in the United States recently.

– If we are to stop these shootings, we must also change the gun laws. We can not prevent killing if we do not prevent the use of weapons, he says.

He also promised that they would get hold of the person in charge and bring him to court.

Journalists on the spot were asked about posts on social media from the person “of special interest”, where the mayor and homelessness are mentioned. This was confirmed by the police that they knew about.

In any case, the police were clear that the motivation for the attack is not known, but that they are investigating this further.
