The US Federation stated that Callaghan would lead the national team at least to defend its titles in the Gold Cup and the CONCACAF Nations Cup (Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean) during the next two months.
Hudson, who was in turn holding the position temporarily, left the American team after only five months of his appointment, in order to embark on a new, undisclosed experience.
The United States is still looking for a coach after Greg Berhalter’s contract expired at the end of last year.
“Callaghan has been an integral part of the coaching staff over the past four years as this young team has grown and developed,” said USA athletic director Matt Crocker.
Callaghan, 41, is the longest-serving member of the US national team’s coaching staff. He started as a strategic analyst in 2019 before becoming an assistant coach in 2021.
The United States will meet Mexico in Las Vegas in the Nations League semi-finals (between June 15-18), while the second semi-final match will bring together Canada and Panama.
