Call for Zeeland trial with PFAS-eating bacteria and plants

Studies conducted in Australia and America in particular could yield something for Zeeland, thinks Jouke Heringa, senior researcher at the HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen. “That involves using a mix of bacteria, fungi and plants, a kind of biological remediation, to remove PFAS from the soil,” explains Heringa.

The studies conducted in America took place in the laboratory. Heringa is especially enthusiastic about what scientists are doing in Australia. “There’s also a number of field studies there to see if certain combinations of bacterial strains and plants can help us get rid of PFAS. They show that significant reductions in PFAS are possible, from 16 to 50 percent.” , says the researcher enthusiastically.
