On the 30th, at Gwangju City Hall in Seo-gu, Gwangju, members of veterans groups who oppose the creation of Jeong Yul-seong Historical Park are struggling to enter the building. Amid the intensifying conflict between the government and the city of Gwangju over the ‘Jeong Yul-seong Historical Park Construction Project’, on the 30th, about 1,000 members of veterans’ groups from all over the country protested in front of Gwangju City Hall, calling for the ‘withdrawal of the project’.

The city of Gwangju requested wise judgment and cooperation from the veterans’ organizations, saying, “I will take responsibility for the commemorative project and promote it well.”

Gwangju City made a comment on the veterans’ organizations’ request to withdraw the Jeong Yul-seong Historical Park project this afternoon, saying, “I think that the claims and demands of the veterans organizations stemmed from a misunderstanding of the original purpose of the Jeong Yul-seong Historical Park project and the actual contents of the project, and I express my deep regret. ”he said.

The city of Gwangju continued, “Jung Yul-seong is a person who has been summoned in various ways for national interests over the past 30 years, such as northern diplomacy, friendly exchanges between Korea and China, and attracting Chinese tourists.” He also emphasized, “The Jeong Yul-seong commemoration project is also a Korea-China friendship exchange project that has been continued since 1988 when President Roh Tae-woo until now, and in Gwangju, five mayors have changed since 2002, led by the central government and followed by local governments.”

The city of Gwangju also said, “We ask for wise judgment and active cooperation from veterans organizations so that Gwangju, a city of democracy, human rights and peace, can escape from the ‘consumptive ideological offensive’.”

Prior to this, about 1,000 members of veterans organizations held a rally at the intersection in front of Gwangju City Hall from noon on the same day, calling for the withdrawal of the Jeong Yul-seong Historical Park project. Some members of the May 18 Public Law Group, including Hwang Il-bong, president of the May 18 Injured Persons Association, also attended the rally. They urged, “The Jeong Yul-seong project is a denial of the national identity and the sacrifice of the fallen heroes and martyrs for the country.”
