SUD education wishes to express its deep horror at the massacres of Israeli civilians committed by Hamas on October 7 as well as the massacres of Palestinian civilians committed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
This is not a clap of thunder in a clear sky: this situation has everything to do with the colonial context in Israel/Palestine since 1948.
In this sense, SUD education reaffirms its support for a just and lasting peace which can only be achieved through respect for the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. In the immediate future, there is an urgent need to obtain a ceasefire and establish a humanitarian corridor.
We can only see that the population of Gaza is abandoned to its fate and we are stunned by the variable geometry indignation of the French government. All lives matter and we reject all racist exploitation – anti-Semitic and Islamophobic – of these massacres.
Moreover, the government, supported by the right and the far right, criminalizes any form of support for the population of Gaza which it conflates with support for Hamas. We are worried about the consequences of this amalgam: public meetings are canceled, activists threatened.
We want to say it forcefully: supporting the Palestinian people and their rights is not supporting Hamas, it is not “advocating terrorism” and it is not being anti-Semitic.
As a workers’ union fiercely committed to democratic freedoms, we demand an end to bans on demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people.
We support the initiative of the Palestinian unions who call to stop the sending of weapons to Israel.
Finally, we would like to affirm our support for the voices in Israel who continue to courageously speak out against colonialism and occupation and for peace.
As part of the National Collective for a Just and Lasting Peace between Palestinians and Israelis (CNPJDPI), SUD education, with the Solidaires trade union, is calling for rallies to be held throughout France on Sunday October 22 for a ceasefire immediate.
