Hygiene measures and the use of masks in people with symptoms are key to protecting the vulnerable population from Covid-19 and other respiratory diseases
Human Diary | La Paz, Baja California Sur. –Knowing that the state and the country maintain a community circulation of pathogens that cause respiratory diseases, such as Covid-19, influenza or enterovirus, the Ministry of Health reiterated the call to the general population to apply basic hygiene measures, such as frequent hand washing and the recommended use of face masks when associated symptoms appear, in order to strengthen prevention.
Although the entity has had a reduced number of hospitalizations of patients due to Covid during 2024, it is important to remember that this disease, like other acute respiratory infections, can develop more severe symptoms in the elderly and people with comorbidities, hence the need to preserve preventive behaviors, said the head of health, Zazil Flores Aldape.
In this regard, he recalled that in the first half of the year, our state has recorded five regrettable deaths due to coronavirus, all in patients aged 70 years and older with no history of vaccination, hence the importance of the population following preventive recommendations such as going to a medical consultation when there are respiratory data, prioritizing home confinement and properly using the mask when one has an infectious condition, but it is necessary to leave the house.
It is important to continue practicing respiratory hygiene, which consists of covering the mouth and nose with the forearm when coughing or sneezing, maintaining ventilation in spaces, and disinfecting objects and areas of common use, he added, emphasizing the strong recommendation that older adults, as well as people with diseases that weaken the immune system, wear face masks when going to crowded places.
In addition to reducing the risk of respiratory infections, hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol-based gel is crucial to prevent acute diarrheal diseases that tend to increase in incidence during this hot season, hence the insistent call for the population to implement this measure, Flores Aldape concluded.
