Call for overtime at the Granby Hospital: the union “astonished”

We got the news last night too […] We are a little surprised that this request arises, underlines Sophie Thériault, vice-president of communications and mobilization of the Union.

We understand that there are needs, but people are already running out of steam, people are already doing a lot of overtime, a lot of compulsory overtime.

In a press release sent on Thursday, the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS indicated that this request was necessary while the workforce issues at the Granby Hospital make maintaining the supply of services to the precarious population and impacting the capacities of the teams in place.

The CIUSSS indicated in an email on Friday that up to now, around ten people have volunteered to work overtime.

Problems that could have been avoided?

Sophie Thériault believes that these labor problems could have been prevented. It’s not the pandemic that’s causing all of this to happen. […] It’s something that explodes there, but it’s still something that professionals have been living for years.

According to her, the lack of personnel is notably linked to the exodus of health professionals to private clinics to obtain better working conditions.

Sickness absences are also generalized in the CIUSSS network, she explains.

Burnout is common in all shifts in all centers of activity in all facilities.

She believes that employee retention begins with negotiating the collective agreement. It goes through better working conditions, reducing the work overload, and that also goes through salary increases, she concludes.
