Lee Jeong-min, chairman of the steering committee of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster Victims’ Families Council (Confucian Association), said in a meeting, “The truth of the disaster must be revealed through a special law and those responsible must be held accountable, and the honor of the 159 victims who lived faithfully each day must be restored. The religious community must continue to the end. “Please show interest and join us,” he said.
General Secretary Kim said, “It breaks my heart and feels shameful to see the bereaved families going through such a tearful journey,” and added, “I will do my best with neighboring religious denominations so that the special law can be promulgated as soon as possible.”
Officials of the 10/29 Itaewon Disaster Victims’ Families Council and the 10/29 Itaewon Disaster Citizens’ Countermeasures Committee met with Bishop Lee Yong-hoon (Matt.), Chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, at the Catholic Diocese of Suwon the previous day, saying that a special law should be promulgated as soon as possible and that a special law be enacted before the memories of eyewitnesses fade. He expressed the opinion that an investigation committee should be launched quickly.
Bishop Lee offered words of consolation to the bereaved family, saying, “The children must have suffered greatly at the scene, but now they will watch over us on earth by God’s side.”
