The bikes from Call a Bike, Deutsche Bahn’s bike-sharing service, are starting the bike season with a makeover. In the new electronic bicycle locks, Telekom’s LTE-M technology, which has been optimized for the Internet of Things (IoT), is being used for the first time. Thanks to this fast wireless connection, users can locate the bikes precisely and rent or lock them in a matter of seconds: With the new Call a Bike app, you scan the QR code on the bike, confirm the booking on your smartphone and the lock opens immediately.
Jürgen Gudd, Chairman of DB Connect: “With our bikes from Call a Bike, people in 80 cities and municipalities are flexible, fast and climate-neutral in their everyday life. Train passengers can seamlessly continue their journey with their bikes from the train station. The new rental bikes complement public transport and thus fulfill the desire of many people to be cheap and to be mobile without their own car.”
Hagen Rickmann, Managing Director Business Customers Telekom Germany: “Call a Bike is a prime example of how state-of-the-art technology can positively influence mobility in the city and change it permanently. Reliable, standardized connectivity like LTE-M is the basis for green innovations, for the benefit of our customers, partners and our society.”
The high-speed network connection is stable even in densely built-up areas and requires little energy. This makes the modernized bikes even more sustainable, since the batteries in the locks no longer have to be recharged as often. Instead, solar cells on the front basket supply the electronics in the wheels with solar energy. Since the baskets are mounted at the front, users always have an eye on their luggage. Green and red LEDs on the lock are also new. They signal to users from afar whether a bike is available. They also show during the ride whether you can return the bike at the current position.
