California: The “winds of the devil” spread the fire like lightning (Photos – Videos) –

The Santa Ana wind phenomenon is the main reason for the large spread of fire in California, USA.

Although it is winter, the warm weather and very dry winds blowing from the interior of the country towards the coasts create uncontrollable fronts.

With gusts of wind reaching up to 160 kilometers per hour, the fires flare up. This is a phenomenon that the inhabitants of the area call “devil winds”

Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Southern California Kostas Synolakis told protothema.gr that these are winds that come down from the mountains of California towards the sea.

They are caused by certain weather conditions in the western part of the USA. The warm wind from the deserts moves through the mountains and canyons towards the sea and accelerates, while gradually becoming drier, conditions ideal for the spread of fires.

The pattern of the winds is irregular and their directions are not predictable, which is why they were called diabolical, explains Kostas Synolakis.

On Wednesday morning, winds were measured at 100 miles per hour, which is an extremely high wind speed, and about double the usual Santa Ana winds.

A map published by the BBC shows that the front in the Palisades covered huge areas in a matter of hours. The area burned was about 3,000 hectares at 14:11 local time and almost reached 12,000 hectares within four hours.
