California Storm Causes Catastrophic Floods and Historic Tropical Storm Warning | Palm Springs Flooding and Earthquake

The storm has already ravaged the Mexican state of Baja California, where roads were turned into rivers of water. There, a person sitting in a car lost his life when it was washed off the road by a river that overflowed its banks.

On Sunday local time, the storm reached the US state of California.

Meteorologists have warned in advance that the storm could cause catastrophic floods.

It is the first time in history that the authorities issued a tropical storm warning in southern California.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency.

Hundreds of flights to and from airports in San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles have been canceled. Sports events have been cancelled.

In addition, schools are closed on Monday in both San Diego and Los Angeles.

Several roads are flooded in and around the desert city of Palm Springs in southern California.

Desert city flooded

In the desert city of Palm Springs, 160 km east of Los Angeles, they usually receive 120 millimeters of rainfall during a year.

It is expected that “Hilary” alone will cause the city to receive between 150 and 250 millimeters of rainfall.

On Sunday, the usually dry city received more rainfall in one hour than ever recorded before, writes Reuters.

Tornado warnings have also been issued in some places.

The storm has led to large amounts of rainfall in the Death Valley in southern California.

People have been hoarding water and other supplies in anticipation of the storm.

In the middle of preparations for the storm, the state was hit by an earthquake. The 5.1 quake struck the city of Ojai, northwest of Los Angeles.
