Prince Harry warns of a “global attack” on democracy and freedom
United Nations, Jul 18 (EFE).- Prince Henry of England warned on Monday from the United Nations headquarters about the existence of “a global attack against democracy and freedom” and urged all citizens of the world to mobilize to face it. Enrique, who delivered the main speech at the event to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day, called for taking the South African leader’s legacy as an example and never giving up on defending values and principles. “We have a choice: either become apathetic, fall into despair and surrender to the gravity of what we are facing, or do what Mandela did every day,” he told the floor of the UN General Assembly. The Duke of Sussex recalled how the historic South African president, who spent 27 years in prison for his fight against apartheid, was always able to “find the light”, even in the darkest moments, and work tirelessly for what he believed in. . Enrique recognized that the world situation today is especially difficult, with an ongoing pandemic, with the climate crisis “wreaking havoc” and with certain groups using “lies and misinformation” to harm the majority. “From the horrible war in Ukraine to the rollback of constitutional rights here in the United States, we are witnessing a global assault on democracy and freedom,” he insisted, apparently referring to the recent US Supreme Court ruling on the right to abortion. The youngest son of Carlos and Diana assured that today he sees the spirit of Mandela reflected in those who mobilize to protect the environment, in young activists in favor of equality and justice or in the work of organizations such as World Central Kitchen, the initiative of the Spanish chef José Andrés to combat hunger and with which his foundation collaborates. In a speech that lasted about 15 minutes, Enrique highlighted his love for Africa, the place where he claims to have felt closer to his mother and where he knew he had met his “soul mate”, Meghan Markle, who accompanied him today in New York . The couple entered the United Nations headquarters smiling and hand in hand to participate in the act in memory of Mandela, in which several senior officials of the organization and national representatives took part, along with other personalities such as the mayor of New York, Eric Adams. Since 2010, the UN celebrates Mandela’s birthday every June 18 with a day in which he encourages people to spend at least 67 minutes working for the community in tribute to the 67 years he dedicated to public service.
