California reports first monkeypox death in the United States

California has confirmed the first monkeypox death this year in the United States (USA).

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed Monday that a Los Angeles County resident died of a monkeypox infection.

The resident suffers from a compromised immune system (immunocompromised) who were seriously ill and were hospitalized, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health said in a statement. Between, Wednesday (14/9/2022).

Authorities did not provide further information on the deceased patient, including age, sex and ethnicity. This is done to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.

This is the first confirmed death from monkeypox reported in the United States.

As of Monday, nearly 22,000 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the United States, according to the latest data from the CDC.

So far, California has recorded the highest number of confirmed monkeypox cases among any state in the United States, with 4,300 cases.
