California records its second highest number of deaths from COVID-19 – NBC Utah

California reported its second-highest number of deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, but also a drop in hospitalizations below 20,000 for the first time since Dec. 27.

The California Department of Public Health has reported that the total of 694 new deaths is second after the record of 708 reported on January 8. Hospitalizations amounted to 19,979.

California officials are pinning their hopes on President Joe Biden as they fight for COVID-19 vaccines to curb the surge in cases that has packed hospitals and morgues.

COVID-19 vaccine doses have been coming in at random as they progress from source to counties, cities and hospitals.

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called for people to get vaccinated, posting a video on Twitter of himself receiving the dose on his right bicep at Dodger Stadium.

“Today was a good day,” he wrote. “I have never been happier to wait in line. If you are eligible, join me and sign up to get your vaccine. Come with me if you want to live!”.
