California Braces for a Strong and Long-lasting Atmospheric River Event
Rain, Winds, and Flooding Threaten Millions
California is preparing for an upcoming atmospheric river event that is expected to have a significant impact on the state, bringing heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and floods to various regions. The event, which is being closely monitored by the authorities, has the potential to cause significant damage to both property and lives.
Unusually High Risk Levels
According to the Weather Prediction Center, several parts of California, including Santa Barbara and Oxnard, are facing a rare Level 4 risk of excessive rainfall. Such high-risk areas are issued on fewer than 4% of days per year, but are responsible for a majority of flood-related damage and deaths.
Preparations Underway
In anticipation of the extreme weather, more than 8,500 members of public safety organizations have been mobilized, and the state Emergency Operation Center has been activated. California Governor Gavin Newsom has ensured that the center will remain operational 24 hours a day, offering assistance to affected areas and coordinating rescue efforts.
Impacts and Expectations
The central and southern coastline of California, including Los Angeles and San Diego, are expected to be the most affected by the storm. The National Weather Service has forecasted heavy rain and flooding, which could pose significant threats to lives and property. Moreover, the storm is expected to bring high winds, with gusts potentially reaching 75 to 80 mph, causing downed trees and power outages.
Prolonged Duration and Snowfall Concerns
The upcoming atmospheric river event is expected to last for several days, resulting in prolonged and continuous moderate to heavy rainfall, especially on Sunday and Monday. Additionally, significant snowfall is expected in areas bordering Nevada, such as Mono County, popular for tourist destinations like Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite National Park.
Precautions and Safety Measures
The state authorities have urged residents to take precautions and be prepared for the upcoming storm. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass advised people to stay at home, stay updated with the latest information, and have emergency supplies ready. Evacuation orders have already been issued in some communities, and residents have been cautioned about the potential for landslides and debris flows.
