Until recently, New York was considered the most severely affected US state by the coronavirus pandemic – now California has overtaken the east coast state. As California Governor Gavin Newsom announced yesterday (local time), the number of detected infections in the state rose by a record number of more than 12,800 to a total of 413,576. That was around 4,700 more cases of infection than have been counted since the beginning of the pandemic in New York.
The number of Covid-19 patients requiring hospital treatment also skyrocketed in California. According to Newsom, a total of 7,000 CoV patients were in inpatient treatment on Monday, more than 2,000 were in the intensive care unit.
When it comes to deaths, New York continues to lead the US statistics: More than 25,000 people in the state died as a result of a CoV infection, in California it was 7,870. Between Tuesday and yesterday there were 115 deaths related to the corona virus in the west coast state, according to authorities.
Twice as many residents as New York
California is the most populous state in the United States and, with a population of 40 million, has almost twice the population of New York. Governor Newsom said yesterday that the sharp rise in infection cases was likely due to the opening up of significant parts of the economy. The many new infections are a reminder of the “enormous effects the virus still has”.
