A Southern California man who fatally tortured a Chihuahua puppy and posted the video online was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison.
Ángel Ramos Corrales, 19, of Riverside, was sentenced for the assault in February, in which he fractured the skull and ribs of his 4-month-old puppy named Canelo, according to a statement from the federal prosecutor’s office.
“The dog’s injuries caused him to continually fall on his head, and Ramos Corrales recorded a video of the injured puppy and posted it on his Instagram account,” according to the statement.
That same day, Ramos Corrales slit the dog’s throat, leaving a 5-centimeter (two-inch) cut, and posted a video on Snapchat showing Canelo lying on the bathroom floor while Ramos Corrales said, “I’m an insensitive one ”and kicked the unconscious puppy, the prosecution said.
The man was detained by the police after several complaints from people who saw the video.
The agents found Ramos Corrales with fresh blood stains on his clothes and wounds on his hands, as well as blood splatters in a bathroom and a room, according to the criminal complaint.
Ramos Corrales said the dog had become “temperamental” and had bitten him, “causing him to lose control,” according to the complaint.
“Ramos Corrales called himself a ‘cold-blooded murderer’ and pointed out that he could not avoid hurting the dog,” the complaint stated.
The cub had to be euthanized.
Ramos Corrales told police that he had smoked marijuana all day, according to a document filed with the court stating that he may also have used alcohol and methamphetamine.
The document, in which the government’s sentencing position was established, states that Ramos Corrales tortured the puppy for two hours, “ruthlessly delighted in causing fatal injuries to Canelo, did not help Canelo in his suffering and cursed Canelo while he was dying. ”.
Ramos Corrales pleaded guilty in June to one count of animal cruelty, which involves seriously injuring an animal, causing extreme physical pain, long-term harm or risk of death.
