With no votes against, California state legislators on September 13 approved a bill intended to combat local policies of “crime-free housing” (crime-free housing), welcomes The Los Angeles Times. Which means that California tenants may no longer be evicted or denied housing because of their criminal history.
If signed into law by the Governor of California, this law will mark a big change from these policies iintroduced in the 1990s throughout the United States allowing the police to target (potential) tenants or owners convicted or even simply suspected of illegal activities.
Supposed to promote public safety, these policies are accused by civil rights advocates of being discriminatory. In fact, landlords use them to evict certain tenants, particularly black people.
