The governor of California, Gavin Newsomofficially proclaimed the November 20, 2024 like him “Transgender Remembrance Day”. This date, although no holiday was declaredseeks to honor transgender people who lost their lives due to violence and hate, reaffirming the state’s commitment to equality, safety and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Here in California, we are sending a clear message that Hate will never be tolerated and we will defend freedomequality and dignity of all people,” commented the state president. Through an official statementthe governor highlighted: “Today is a forceful reminder of the unacceptable violence and discrimination that they face daily transgender people.
Violence and discrimination against transgender people remains a worrying reality around the world. However, since the proclamation of the Transgender Remembrance Daythe California government attempted, at least symbolically, to not only honor the lives lost, but also to issue a call to action. “In the face of deplorable anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and growing wave of intolerance, it is crucial to oppose the forces of hate that seek to dehumanize people and harm our communities“Newsom noted in the statement.
In the proclamation, Newsom highlighted California’s efforts to advance the protection of the rights of LGBTQ+ people. “In collaboration with the LGBTQ Caucus, our state has led pioneering actions to protect and support the LGBTQ communitysuch as creating safe environments in schools and communities, strengthening anti-hate programs, increasing security for at-risk community organizations, access to health care, and promoting health equity,” he explained.
