California confirms first monkeypox death in the United States

LOS ANGELES (ANTARA) – California has confirmed the first death from monkeypox this year in the United States.

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed Monday that a Los Angeles County resident died of a monkeypox infection.

The resident was “severely immunocompromised and was hospitalized,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

No further information regarding the individual such as age, gender or ethnicity was provided by the department, which cited the need to protect “confidentiality and privacy”.

Some people with severe immune system disorders who suspect they have monkeypox are encouraged to seek medical care and treatment early and remain under provider care for the duration of their illness, the department said.

This is the first known death from monkeypox reported in the United States.

As of Monday, nearly 22,000 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the United States, according to the latest data from the CDC. So far, California has reported the highest number of confirmed monkeypox cases among any state in the United States, with 4,300 cases.
