CALIDH sends urgent letter to IACHR about Monsignor Álvarez

Given the secrecy maintained by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega, regarding the condition of Monsignor Álvarez, the Center for Inter-American Legal Assistance for Human Rights (CALIDH), sent an urgent letter to the executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) so that order the state of Nicaragua to show the religious.

“Given the missing status of the prelate, CALIDH urges the commission to pronounce itself to order the State of Nicaragua to show it, to stop any act of torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, provide care and timely food in order to avoid any irreversible damage to their health”, says the note issued on March 11.

The letter comes after a note published by La Prensa this Saturday, where they reported that ecclesiastical sources consulted expressed “not knowing a word, it’s a mystery, we don’t know where he is, we don’t know how they have him, we don’t know if they feed him, we do not know anything”.

CALIDH states that this situation is worrisome and “consolidates the information provided to the commission to issue the precautionary measures requested since February 20, 2023 by this center.”

Monsignor Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, 56, bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa, became the first bishop to be arrested and convicted in Nicaraguan history.
