Because if this native of Perpignan knows the Pyrenees well, it is the first time that he will perform at such an altitude. “I was told to bring warm clothes…”, he slips, smiling, but it’s only a detail as he is impatient to discover the site and especially to share this privileged moment with his audience.
“There is a real bond with the public. Today, everything is versatile and we are all getting older, but when I see the loyalty of the public, it warms my heart. Some come with their children, there are all generations” , he rejoices, not without also mentioning his attachment to the Pyrenees. “It’s the story of my family”, relates this descendant of Spanish exiles and a family from Vernet-les-Bains. It was in this small village in the Pays de Conflent that Cali grew up, and experienced grief, which he confides in his book “Only children know how to love”. “The grief is there but you have to find little things to continue to marvel”, invites the one who is also involved in the associative world “to bring my little thing”.
20 years of solo career
His emotion at the approach of this Pyrenean concert is all the stronger as he celebrates this year the 20th anniversary of his first album, “L’Amour parfait”. A dozen other albums followed, but also films, plays, duets, etc. Always with the same love for singing and sharing. Between two festivals in the South-West, and after a series of concerts in France and abroad, he will therefore rise, this Friday, to the top of the “lighthouse” of the Hautes-Pyrénées to perform a selection of songs chosen especially for the occasion. While waiting for the release of his anniversary album in January, followed by a special tour.
“I’ll write things down from the Peak”
“The hero is not the singer but the song. We can sing in small venues or at festivals, it’s not the same format but what matters is that there is joy”, underlines the interpreter of “When is happiness?”. “For the Peak, I have planned a mix of songs and I think we’re going to have fun up there, it’s going to be great”, he invites, particularly delighted to find the public after the covid period.
“Life is fragile and there are vibrations that must be grasped and these vibrations, we find them in the theater, in concerts,… We have to squeeze together, jump together. In addition, at the Pic du Midi, we will be all near the stars! I even think that I will write things while coming down from there”, he advances.
And under the celestial vault, Cali will also have a thought for Jane Birkin. “I miss her a lot,” says the singer. We shared scenes, we were supposed to do a duet… his death upset me a lot and I’m not the only one. Jane was our big or little sister to all of us”, he says, moved.
