Cali. After more than 12 hours of discussions, delegates to the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16) agreed today here to create the so-called Cali Fund, which establishes payments for the use of digitized genetic sequences.
One of the most important objectives of the financial mechanism will be to guarantee access to the benefits obtained from the use of genetic information on biodiversity to the countries from which these data come.
The nations participating in the event agreed that industries such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, which are the ones that most use these DNA sequences to develop products, must contribute financially so that the supplier States can invest in protecting and conserving their biological diversity.
