CALGARY – Ryan Huska became the new coach of Calgary hockey players. The 47-year-old coach replaced Darryl Sutter, whose contract the club terminated after the season, on the NHL team’s substitute. The Flames announced it on their official website.
It will be Huska’s first job as an NHL head coach. In the past five seasons, he worked as an assistant.
“I’m honored to be trusted by the Flames owners, general manager Craig Conroy and the entire management team to coach this team. The position I’m coming into is a little different than most because I know our players very well. We have great hockey players who they want to win. My job is to inspire them every day to help take our team to the next level.” Huska said.
Calgary players managed to advance to the playoffs only once in the previous three seasons. “While continuity and familiarity with the players is an advantage, we have seen firsthand Ryan’s work ethic. He builds trust with players, has a critical mindset and a plan.” noted the new general manager of the “flames” Conroy.
Huska began his coaching career in 2002 as an assistant in the Kelowna club in the Western Hockey League, in 2007 he was named head coach. In the 2014/2015 season, the Flames hired Huska to coach Adirondack in the farm American Hockey League.
The Flames also include Slovak forward Adam Ružička, who has a contract for the next season as well. Last year, he played 44 games in the NHL regular season with a record of 6 goals and 14 assists.
