2011 – The EU Parliament gives the go-ahead for consumer information about the ingredients of food. In the future, information about salt, fat and sugar will be mandatory. The new rules can become binding from 2014 at the earliest.
1999 – The North Rhine-Westphalian Constitutional Court declares the five percent hurdle in local elections applicable in the state to be unconstitutional.
1998 – The European Parliament passes a biopatent directive. The guideline clarifies which biotechnological inventions may be patented. It must be implemented in national law in each case.
1988 – 167 people are killed in an explosion on the Piper Alpha oil rig in the North Sea off Scotland. It is the worst accident on an oil platform to date.
1967 – Nigerian troops begin military action against the eastern region of the country, Biafra, which had previously declared independence. The war that followed cost the lives of about two million people.
1938 – Representatives from 32 countries and dozen aid organizations meet in Évian, France, and discuss the fate of the Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria. The conference ended almost without result, and hardly any state agreed to accept additional refugees.
1928 – “Lights of New York” is premiered in New York. The so-called “All-Talkie” is the first pure sound film in feature length.
