What church holiday is today?
Memorial Day of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday
According to legendParaskeva was born in Iconium. Her parents especially revered Friday, the day Jesus suffered on the cross. In memory of the Passion of Christ, they named their daughter Friday (in Greek, Paraskeva).
Having reached adulthood, the saint took a vow of virginity and began preaching among the pagans. In the year 300, the military leader of Emperor Diocletian came to the city to exterminate all believers. Paraskeva was tortured and then thrown into prison, barely alive. There God miraculously healed the saint, but this did not stop her tormentors. As a result, Paraskeva’s head was cut off, believers buried her body, and later people began to receive healing of mental and physical ailments from the relics of the great martyr.
