Calculated reinforcements instead of big risks

In the highly dynamic MLB market, the New York Mets, under the leadership of President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, have been able to maintain admirable discipline. Despite the absence of high-profile stars on the transfer market, the Mets opted for moderate improvements to their roster.

Some industry insiders, including Stearns himself, described the price of the few top players available as “aggressive.” Stearns had already emphasized at his introduction in October that his vision was to remain competitive in 2024 without jeopardizing the team’s future. With a current record of 57-51, the Mets are only half a game behind the last wild card spot.

An opposing scout said, “It’s impressive how calm and measured Stearns has been. He stuck to his vision and his schedule, even when it would have been easy for him to ask the owner for money for a player like Blake Snell. But Stearns was not willing to sacrifice future prospects.”

According to reports from The Athletic, the Mets were able to retain their top prospects while still expanding their roster. The new additions: right-handers Phil Maton, Ryne Stanek, Huascar Brazobán and Tyler Zuber, as well as left-handed hitter Jesse Winker and right-handed starting pitcher Paul Blackburn. These acquisitions specifically address weaknesses of the team, especially in the bullpen and starting rotation, given the injuries to Christian Scott and Kodai Senga.

The signing of veterans like Maton and Stanek, at minimal expense, was praised. Maton was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays for a future player or cash consideration, while Thomas was traded for Stanek. Brazobán, with a 2.84 ERA in 31⅔ innings, was described as a “late bloomer” whose skills have improved greatly over the past two years.

Zuber is considered a wildcard. Although he has only pitched 3⅓ innings in the major leagues over the past two years, he has a strikingly impressive pitching ability. Scouts agree that Zuber could be a valuable addition if properly managed.

Opinions were divided on Blackburn, who has a 4.41 ERA in 51 innings this year. While some questioned his competency, others saw him as a valuable member of the rotation. His contractual commitment beyond next season gives the Mets additional options and security.

Overall, the Mets’ targeted reinforcements are significant, even if they don’t generate much excitement. However, Jesse Winker was able to earn positive marks due to his consistent performances and improved physique. The decision not to trade away top-class talents and still strengthen the squad in a meaningful way could put the Mets in a good position for the coming season.
