Baltimore Orioles legend and Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr revealed on Thursday 20-A that he has successfully overcome the prostate cancer he was diagnosed with last February.
Ripken, who will turn 60 at the end of August, said he is symptom free and has seen a urologist as a precaution. The cancer was contained to his prostate and failed to spread to other organs and the former star player said he is now fully recovered after undergoing surgery in February.
“It’s been a pretty miraculous few months for me,” said Ripken Jr. “I’m cancer-free. The surgery couldn’t have gone better; the result couldn’t have been better, and I’ve been back to doing everything I did before.”
A native of Maryland, Ripken Jr. played 21 consecutive seasons with the Orioles, where he won the 1983 World Series, was a 19-time All-Star Game nominee and is a member of the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.
In September 1995, Ripken surpassed Lou Gehrig to claim the all-time record for the most consecutive games played in the Big Top – a record that still stands with 2,632 games in a row.
