Prospective vice presidential candidate (cawapres) Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin considers the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) which granted the lawsuit regarding the requirement for registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidates to be at least 40 years old or have experience as a Regional Head, to be surprising.
“This (MK) decision is surprising,” said Cak Imin in Cibinong, Bogor, West Java, Monday (16/10) evening WIB.
Even so, Cak Imin emphasized this MK has the authority to decide on a lawsuit that is final and binding. So, he asked everyone to obey the Constitutional Court’s decision.
“Everyone must obey the Constitutional Court’s decision even though the decision shocked many parties,” he said.
On the other hand, Cak Imin also raised his voice regarding the chances of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)’s son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who has the opportunity to run as Prabowo Subianto’s vice presidential candidate as a result of this decision. For him, the democratic climate in Indonesia requires all citizens to have political rights.
However, he reiterated that the people will be the final determinant of the results of the 2024 presidential election.
“Yes, we are preparing well. Whoever the competitor is, we are ready,” he said.
Previously, the Constitutional Court granted part of the request for a judicial review of Article 169 letter q of Law (UU) Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections which regulates the minimum age limit for presidential candidates (capres) and vice presidential candidates (cawapres).
Case Number 90/PUU-XXI/2023 was filed by a student named Almas Tsaqib Birru Re A. The Petitioner asked the Constitutional Court to change the minimum age limit for presidential and vice presidential candidates to 40 years or experience as a Regional Head at both the Provincial and Regency/City levels.
