Caitlyn Jenner describes herself as a “Poster Child for Change” and an “outsider” in the running for governor of California.
Jenner, an Olympic decathlete who became a reality TV star, launched her campaign in April as the recall of Democratic governor Gavin Newsom took off. Newsom is now as good as certain that it will have to face a race in the fall after its critics have collected enough signatures to force a special election by the end of the year.
A handful of prominent Republicans – including Jenner, John Cox, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Falcouner, and former Congressman Doug Ose – are campaigning to replace Newsom.
When Politico asked why she was running for office, Jenner said she thinks it takes “someone like me to make change”.
“To be honest, there is a lot of work to be done. I think it takes someone like me, and I’m not kidding about it, but I’m the figurehead for change, ”said Jenner. “California has to change. And I think it takes someone like me, an outsider. People would ask me you know why are you doing this You have never done anything political. I’ve done a lot, but certainly not at this level. But recent polls have shown that most Californians want Newsom to remain governor. The latest poll by the University of California Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found that only 36 percent of voters support the dismissal.
The poll also found that the leading Republicans are Faulconer and Cox, with 22 percent of voters supporting their candidacies. Jenner received the least amount of support, with just 6 percent of respondents saying they would vote to replace Newsom.
Jenner, who has no prior political experience, told Politico that she initially turned away those in her Republican circle who told her to run.
