Caisse d’Epargne: five Toulouse residents, including a reality TV candidate, defraud € 900,000 from the bank

Five Toulousans accused of having defrauded, thanks to a security breach, nearly 900,000 euros at the Caisse d’Epargne Midi-Pyrénnées appeared on Tuesday, February 2.

Five Toulouse residents from 26 to 36 went before the Toulouse Criminal Court on Tuesday, February 2 for fraud. Between 2013 and 2014 they allegedly defrauded more than 900,000 euros at the Caisse d’Epargne Midi-Pyrénées.

As reported France Blue, the five acolytes had set up a strategy as simple as it was effective by taking advantage of a loophole in the control of checks during collection. A modus operandi that consisted of three fairly simple steps.

Opening an account and fake checks

The five residents of the Mirail district first recruited people who, for a few hundred euros, opened an account at the bank. One of them, a former candidate of reality show, would then have taken advantage of his fame to recruit nearly 25 people according to The Dispatch.

People enrolled in the scam then had to credit the accounts with stolen checks and perform transfers to other bogus customers of the bank. France Bleu Midi-Pyrénnées reports that 48 people would then be identified in this stage.

It only remains to recover the money. “To do this, the head of the network travels and supports people who withdraw cash at the counter.” explains the radio.

Confused because of Facebook

The little merry-go-round works well until the investigators discover a video on Facebook showing bundles of stolen checks. They make the connection. Part of the money would have been used to buy commercial premises in Paris.

The five defendants are in pre-trial detention and have since been under judicial supervision. Their little merry-go-round could cost them dearly …
