Cairns Airport Flood: People Fleeing in Boats, Crocodiles in the Streets – Updates from Queensland Premier

Planes at Cairns Airport are also “floating” in the water due to the flood. Also, various shots taken show people fleeing their homes in boats and even crocodiles swimming in the city streets.

Queensland Premier Stephen Miles told the media the biggest concern was for people further north from Kears. For example, in one of the cities, nine people spent the night on the roof of the hospital because the emergency teams could not reach them. On Monday morning, people were rescued, but Miles emphasized that it will be necessary to evacuate the entire city.

Access to drinking water, sanitation, electricity and telecommunications is also a concern, with many roads blocked due to flooding and no air support available to trapped people.

Forecasters estimate that the intense rains will continue for the rest of the day. The situation is not made any better by the current high tide, which combined with the flood in low-lying areas are exposed to even greater safety risks.

The rain will begin to ease on Tuesday, but the rivers have not reached their peak yet and could remain at high water levels for several more days.

Several rivers are expected to break records set during the 1977 ‘mammoth flood’. For example, the Daintree River has already broken the previous record by two metres.

On the other hand, the authorities have estimated that the natural disaster will cost them more than one billion Australian dollars, or approximately 614 thousand euros.
