Turnhout –
The famous café Ranonkel in Begijnenstraat remained closed on Sunday morning due to a strike. “The manager cannot plan,” sighs the striking employee.
The young lady who has to keep the café open sits outside in front of the café on Sunday morning. The door remains closed. The sun is shining and a little further away is the weekly flea market, so normally the café terrace is already full, but today the customers are sitting on a terrace on the Grote Markt. “The Ranonkel staff is on strike,” says regular customer Stefan Lauwers.
The striking employee does not want to say too much about it. She has already resigned. But the camel has overflowed. “It was planned that a second staff member would arrive at 10 am, but he knew nothing about it and could not come at all. I would have to handle this all by myself. That is not possible. Our boss says he is not a catering boss, but a businessman. Then a businessman who knows nothing about planning. I’m not the first to leave here.”
Around noon, another staff member has arrived to open the café. The manager is not available for comment. (gvn)
