New Hope for Children wiht Post-Covid: Expertise Centers Open Across the Netherlands
Table of Contents
For 10-year-old Caeden from The Hague, life has been far from normal for the past three years. Simple activities like climbing stairs, playing football, or attending school for a full day are out of reach. His greatest wish? To be a “normal child” again. today, that wish feels a little closer as three post-covid expertise centers officially open their doors for children adn young people across the Netherlands. “These centers offer us hope,” says Caeden’s mother, Anouk.
A Wish Tree of Hope
In the living room of Anouk and Caeden’s home, a wish tree stands as a symbol of their journey. Its branches hold both big and small dreams: going to the cinema with friends, returning to school,or simply playing without exhaustion.”It gives hope and strength when a wish has been fulfilled. Because what is very normal for someone else is not for three years,” Anouk explains.
Caeden’s struggles are profound. The slightest exertion can send his temperature soaring to 39 degrees, forcing him to rest for hours. He can play football, but only for five minutes. After years of being unable to attend school, he now goes for one hour a day, three days a week.
A Growing Crisis: Over 40,000 Children Affected
Caeden is not alone. More than 40,000 children and young people in the Netherlands are estimated to suffer from post-Covid complaints. However, many cases remain undiagnosed. “We have a strong suspicion that only a fraction now has the right diagnosis,” says Diewke De Haen, spokesperson for patient organizations like PostcovidNL and Children with Long-Covid (KLC).”Many parents don’t realise their child’s illness could be post-Covid.”
Caeden’s journey began in February 2022, just after the last lockdown.”The schools had just reopened. He had just left school when he got sick,” Anouk recalls. What followed was a prolonged battle with symptoms like fever, loss of taste and smell, and extreme fatigue.
The Lingering Impact of Brain Fog
Three years later, Caeden’s condition remains unchanged—and at times, worse. “Last November, we thought the end was in sight because he was doing a bit better. Unfortunately, he got Covid again in December, followed by the flu. Now, it’s even worse than before,” Anouk shares.
One of the most debilitating symptoms is brain fog. “He can suddenly forget what five times five is,” she explains. The lack of understanding from others has been a constant challenge.”Caeden is a cheerful boy. On the outside, you see nothing. When he says, ‘I can’t,’ people would say, ‘Come on, boy, a little.’ But that’s not how it works. He just can’t do it.”

The journey is far from over, but with the opening of these centers, the path to recovery feels a little brighter. For Caeden, the wish tree in his living room may soon bear the fruit of a long-awaited normalcy. The arrival of three expertise centers in Amsterdam, Maastricht, and Utrecht marks a critically important step forward in addressing Post-Covid symptoms in children. For parents like Anouk and her son Caeden, these centers offer a glimmer of hope. “We look forward to it and hope that he can go there soon. It offers him a prospect of better times. It offers hope that we can work together on advancement,” Anouk shares.
According to Diewke De Haen, these centers are crucial for both children and their families. “You have to imagine that so far there was no place where you could go with your child and where people had knowledge of the disease. In these centers, they know what Post-Covid is and what can be used when and how it can be used,” she explains. However, the journey to recovery isn’t immediate.Although the centers are now officially open, hundreds of registrations have already been received. Pediatrician Sanne Nijhof of UMC Utrecht clarifies, “The centers were not set up to handle all post-Covid patients in the Netherlands in the short term, but to quickly gain knowledge and experience and then share them with hospitals, general practitioners, and other care providers. Such as,we want the best care for Post-Covid patients possible; close to home, further from home.”
Patients at these centers receive personalized treatment plans aimed at improving their symptoms and overall quality of life. For Caeden, this means the possibility of returning to a normal life. “I hope I will be better again soon,” he says.”That I can do everything again and play football again. Because I miss that very much now. I am too tired for it now. But I hope that I can go to school again soon.”

Editor: anouk, can you share your experience with your son Caeden’s Post-Covid symptoms and how these new expertise centers provide hope for your family?
Anouk: Absolutely.Caeden has been struggling with fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms for months. As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to see your child unable to do the things they love, like playing football or going to school. These new centers in Amsterdam, Maastricht, and Utrecht are a beacon of hope for us.They offer specialized care and the promise of improvement. Editor: Diewke, as an expert, why are these centers so crucial for children with Post-Covid symptoms?
Diewke De Haen: These centers fill a critical gap. Until now, there was no centralized place where families could go for specialized care for Post-Covid in children. The experts at these centers understand the complexities of the condition and can tailor treatment plans to address specific symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and loss of taste or smell. This is a huge step forward in providing comprehensive care for these young patients.
Editor: Sanne, how are these centers addressing the overwhelming demand for treatment?
Sanne Nijhof: While the centers have already received hundreds of registrations, they weren’t established to treat all Post-Covid patients in the Netherlands immediately. The primary goal is to quickly gather knowledge and experience, which can then be shared with hospitals, general practitioners, and other care providers. This way, we can ensure that the best possible care is available, whether it’s close to home or further away.
Editor: Caeden, what are your hopes for the future?
Caeden: I just want to feel better again. I miss playing football and going to school. Right now, I’m too tired for those things, but I hope that with the help of the center, I can get back to my normal life soon.
