CADTM welcomes Mexico’s attitude of not inviting the King of Spain to its inauguration

The international organization Committee for the Abolition of Illegitimate Debts (CADTM), highlighted the position of the elected president Claudia Sheinbaum of not inviting the King of Spain Felipe VI to the ceremony of her inauguration as president of Mexico, stating that her attitude “calls into question the submissive positions of the Latin American right-wing governments” towards the Spanish monarchy.

The organization based in Liege, Belgium, considered that the reason for the absence of the Spanish monarch at the ceremony next Tuesday and after which Sheinbaum Pardo will become the first woman to govern Mexico, “is due to the arrogant and colonialist behavior of the “King Felipe VI not to respond to the request of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to apologize to the Native Peoples of Mexico for the atrocities committed during the colonization of this country and the rest of the Continent.”

The organization recalls that “in the face of the King’s arrogant imperialist silence,” the Government of Mexico paused its diplomatic relations, in 2022, with the Spanish Kingdom.

The CADTM referred to attitudes that the King of Spain has expressed in official ceremonies of other Latin American governments.

In that sense, he refers to the fact that the “arrogant colonialist attitude of Felipe VI” was also evident when he refused to stand during the inauguration ceremony of President Gustavo Petro, of Colombia, before the transfer of the sword of the Liberator Simón. Bolívar from the Nariño Palace to where the event was being held. He also points out that Felipe VI also assumed a “cold attitude” during the inauguration of President Luis Arce Catacora, of Bolivia.

“The snub of the new Mexican government towards King Felipe VI calls into question the submissive positions of the Latin American right-wing governments, as well as the complacency of the Spanish ‘socialist’ Government, towards an anachronistic and corrupt institution such as the Spanish monarchy,” the organization said in a text on its website.

He adds that “although the CADTM welcomes the position of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum in denouncing the colonial past of the Spanish monarchy and overcoming the traditional submission of Latin American governments towards said institution, we are aware that there is still a need to break with neocolonial institutions such as the World Bank (WB) or the International Monetary Fund (IMF), created 80 years ago, after the signing of the Bretton Woods Agreements, with the aim of expanding American and ‘Western’ power in the post-war scenario.”

The CADTM regretted that since then both the IMF and the WB “continue to work at the service of a patriarchal and racist capitalism, increasingly concentrated, impoverishing people and devastating nature and Life. From a submission to external debt and Free Trade Agreements that benefit transnational corporations.”

“It is for this reason that measures like the one we welcome today must be accompanied by popular resistance. We trust that the people of Our America with their struggles, mobilizations and organization will move towards their true and definitive emancipation,” he concluded.

The CADTM is an international organization founded in 1990 and retains the initials of its previous name, Committee for the Cancellation of Third World Debt. It is made up of members and local committees from Europe, Latin America and Asia and promotes alternatives opposed to the neoliberal model that allow people to achieve universal satisfaction of fundamental needs, freedoms and human rights in developing countries (previously called the Third World). ) and in the excluded populations of developed countries, for which the cancellation of external debt is considered essential.
