MADRID —
Cádiz’s drought stretched to 17 games without a win when they lost 1-0 on Friday against Alavés in the Spanish League.
One of Cádiz’s only two victories so far this season came in their first league match against Alavés. The Cádiz team, located in second-to-last place, could not achieve another victory, despite playing a balanced duel against the locals.
Luis Rioja scored from the penalty spot six minutes into the second half. It was determined that Iván Alejo knocked down Kike García, and Rioja, with his charge, was able to deceive the goalkeeper.
The second goal in three games for the winger placed Alavés in twelfth position in La Liga, tying on points with Rayo Vallecano.
Cádiz, meanwhile, remains in 18th position. The pressure is piling on coach Sergio González, whose team has not scored points so far in 2024.
“With the penalty everything is uphill, especially because of the need to score, which was very important for us,” said Cádiz goalkeeper Conan Ledesma on the DAZN broadcast. “We don’t deserve this, Cádiz doesn’t deserve this.”
Girona is the leader of the league, one point ahead of Real Madrid, which has a game in hand.
