Cachan High School Staff Exercise Right of Withdrawal to Denounce Dilapidated Conditions

From February 27, for four days at the Cachan high school in Val-de-Marne, more than a hundred teachers, school life and laboratory staff members exercised their right of withdrawal to denounce the dilapidated, the unsanitary conditions of certain premises and the insecurity they represent.

This movement has nothing to do with the scuffles which then occurred outside the high school on March 5.

For years, the staff and 2,600 students have lived in an enormous structure, certain parts of which, built in the 1960s and 70s, have been abandoned by the Île-de-France Region which, on the contrary, is much less reluctant to water private education.

Walls are leprous, window frames are eaten away by humidity, some windows do not close or do not open, electrical installations are doubtful, it is sometimes 12°C in certain rooms, water infiltrations are recurring in buildings, false ceiling slabs fall to the ground, soaked with water. Added to this is the massive arrival of rats and strong suspicions of the presence of asbestos.

The staff, exasperated by these working and student teaching conditions, little listened to when they send polite letters, and after warning several times, therefore decided to exercise their right of withdrawal, to expand and publicize the maximum movement. Students and parents, as well as elected officials, joined the fight.

Despite the pressures from the hierarchy and the fatigue created by time-consuming administrative procedures, the mobilized staff were able to hold their own for a whole week. The region finally sent a letter minimizing the situation, and the rectorate denied the staff their right of withdrawal by forcing them to return to work on Monday March 4, while recognizing the need to accelerate certain work and to implement sanitary standards certain rooms.
