After the cable theft near Mannheim, there are still route closures, diversions and delays in rail traffic. Among other things, trains must be rerouted between Mannheim-Waldhof and Lampertheim in Hesse, as a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn (DB) said on Saturday (December 23, 2023). Long-distance traffic to Frankfurt/Main is also affected. Operations will initially be suspended on the Mannheim-Groß-Rohrheim and Worms-Biblis routes. Travelers should continue to expect delays and partial cancellations.
“We are currently assuming that we will be able to complete the work late this evening and that the trains will run again as scheduled when operations begin on December 24th,” the railway spokesman later added. Workers are on duty despite the weekend and the upcoming holidays.
Train services suspended after cable theft
It was said that the thieves took advantage of a cable shaft that had been opened during construction work on Thursday evening. The copper cables that are important for the railway’s control and safety technology were located there. According to the federal police, the previously unknown perpetrators cut the cables over a distance of several kilometers. They transported part of it – several hundred meters away.
The railway spokesman said that the railway is on site with numerous specialists, construction teams and technology to ensure that the route can be used again for passengers as quickly as possible.
The Karlsruhe Federal Police Inspectorate is investigating the dangerous interference with rail traffic, the particularly serious case of theft and damage to property. The amount of property damage was still unclear. Witnesses are being sought.
