Cable fire in Hamburg: long-distance rail travel is running again NDR.de – News

Status: 05/16/2022 06:43 a.m

The trains have been running again since Monday morning. There were delays and cancellations for three days. The reason was an embankment fire at Hamburg’s Sternschanze train station, in which a cable duct had already been damaged on Thursday evening.

The cable could be repaired on Sunday evening. Thus, long-distance traffic in Hamburg started again regularly at the start of the new week, said a spokesman for the railway. However, there may still be deviations from the timetable for individual trains. Passengers are therefore asked to register before starting their journey on the Deutsche Bahn website.

Long lines in front of service counters

As early as late Sunday evening, Deutsche Bahn confirmed that there was still a “high volume of travelers” in Hamburg. Many people were waiting at the main station for their departure options. Many guests waited with packed suitcases in front of the service counters in the lobby. Queues also formed in front of some platforms.

Until Sunday, there were backlogs on the trains. According to the railway spokesman, the reason for the delays in the repair work was an ICE that had broken down near the Hamburg-Sternschanze station on Sunday due to technical problems. The travelers had to be taken off the train.

Several ICE connections affected

According to the railways, several ICE lines were affected. On the route Kiel / Lübeck – Hamburg – Hanover – Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe – southern Germany, there were failures between northern Germany and Hanover. The ICE trains Kiel/Hamburg – Hanover – Frankfurt/M – Stuttgart/Switzerland started and ended in Hamburg. The ICE trains Hamburg – Berlin – Erfurt – Munich ran between Hamburg and Berlin only every hour. ICE/IC/EC trains Hamburg – Bremen – Cologne – southern Germany started/ended in Hamburg-Harburg instead of Hamburg-Altona. The EC trains Hamburg – Berlin – Dresden – Prague began and ended in Berlin.

Small fire, big impact: A cable through which all communication runs was damaged.

The cable fire was near the Sternschanze train station – on the so-called connecting train, which runs from Altona via Diebsteich, Sternschanze and Dammtor to the main station. It is one of the busiest routes nationwide. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the police are currently not assuming external influence. The entire communication on this route between the signal boxes runs over the affected cable, the railway said. About the points and the signals would be controlled. According to the railway spokeswoman, the cable is a 1,000-wire copper cable. It was very difficult to get that back.

Already on Friday many failures

There had already been massive disruptions on Friday. People were queuing in Hamburg’s train stations, and long queues formed in front of the information desks.
