Cable car tragedy in Italy: three people detained for deliberate actions

Among the detainees is also the owner of the Streza-Mataroni aerial cableway.

Investigators believe the emergency brakes were deliberately damaged to avoid disruption to the aerial cable traffic. There have been “anomalies” there since the end of April, and the car has been carrying passengers in this technical condition for several days, making several trips.

As you know, 15 people lost their lives in the accident. The cable car was a few meters away from its destination when it collapsed and landed in a mass of trees after a 20-meter fall.

People are especially shocked by the story of a family, where the death of both parents and a nine – year – old son, left alone a surviving five – year – old, who was taken to a hospital in Turin after the disaster.

Aerial cable car traffic in the region was resumed only on April 24, when the restrictions on Covid-19 were relaxed.

The cable system was opened in 1970, but closed in 2014 for renovation. Usually 40 people can be accommodated in one car, but due to the epidemiological situation, the maximum number of passengers has been reduced.

There was an incident at this place in 2001, but without human casualties. At that time, when the car got stuck, the responsible officials evacuated 40 people.
