At least 14 people died during an cable car in a mountainous area Italy suddenly fell. One of the victims killed was a child. One other child was seriously injured in this incident.
As reported Reuters, Monday (24/5/2021), there were five Israelis among the victims killed in the incident on Sunday (23/5) local time.
The cable car, called Stresa-Mottarone, connects Lake Maggiore with Mount Mottarone in a 20-minute journey. Lake Maggiore is known to be located at an altitude of nearly 1,400 meters above sea level at the top of Mount Mottarone.
“We are devastated, in pain,” the mayor of Stresa, Marcella Severino, told local television, RAI.
Severino said that the cable car was moving toward the mountain when it suddenly plunged from a height of 20 meters and rolled several times down the slope before being stopped by trees.
But people trekking around the site reported hearing a loud hiss before the cable car crashed. Severino added that the incident was believed to have been caused by a cut of one of the cable car cables.
Some of the victims were found trapped inside the cabins, with others thrown into forest areas. There is no mention of the total number of people in the cable car who fell.
But local authorities said 14 people were killed in this incident.
