Cabinet will warn against ‘draconian measures’, more clarity on Tuesday

The cabinet is unlikely to announce new corona measures on Tuesday. Prime Minister Rutte and Minister De Jonge will address the press and, according to insiders from The Hague, will warn against ‘draconian measures’ if people do not comply with the rules.

This has become clear after the Catshuis meeting today between part of the cabinet and its advisers, including RIVM. Policymakers and experts consulted for more than two hours about the possible scenarios.

‘Lockdown and curfew’

On Tuesday, the cabinet will provide more clarity about the next steps in the approach to the corona crisis. It is not expected to be a major press conference with new measures, because according to the government it is still too early to see the effect of the current restrictions. According to insiders, it will be emphasized that people must adhere to the measures.

Because if the number of new infections continues to rise, the cabinet will take tough measures. “Rutte has said before that all options are on the table,” says political reporter Marleen de Rooy. “A total lockdown and a curfew are also measures that the government will not rule out if the figures continue to rise.”
