Cabinet struggles with OMT advice: how big should the hammer be that smashes the corona wave? | Inland

VIDEOOn the day of a record number of corona infections, the cabinet is struggling with the question of which measures are appropriate and effective. Those involved realize that a ‘short blow’ is needed to flatten the winter wave, but are not yet sure how this should be done. The Catshuis consultation will therefore continue this evening. ‘Almost all options are on the table’.

The outgoing cabinet needs more time to reach agreement. In the Catshuis, the ministers involved spoke for more than three hours this morning with OMT chairman Jaap van Dissel, among others, they will continue to talk at 7 p.m. tonight. “More time is needed, it is a complicated discussion,” reports a source from The Hague.

The OMT advises canceling events and curbing catering and culture in the next two weeks, but drawing up an appropriate and fair package of measures is not easy this time. Closing a cinema while a café remains open does not rhyme, a source admits: ,,You prefer to draw one line, that’s what conversations are about. All options are on the table, except the school closure,” says this insider.

According to a source from the OMT, more far-reaching measures such as a curfew are ‘out of the question now’.

The choices that the Outbreak Management Team presents to politicians are all tricky. It was announced this morning that the experts would prefer a short-term, mild lockdown to flatten the autumn wave.

In addition, the maximum allowed group size should be adjusted again, events can then be deleted, the closing times of the catering industry should also be shortened. And everyone – also in cafes – would be tied to a fixed seat again. Theaters and cinemas should even close, although those involved also say that this is difficult to sell if other locations remain open.
Het 2G protocol can also be entered then unvaccinated people are no longer welcome in certain places. That takes weeks to enter. Until then, other action is needed.

The cabinet has to work out the details today. The measures will be announced tomorrow evening during a press conference.
