Cabinet press conference at 7 pm, possible additional measures in Randstad | NOW

Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister Hugo De Jonge (Public Health) will give a press conference on Monday evening at 7 p.m. It is expected that additional regional measures will be announced because the number of corona infections is increasing particularly quickly in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) meets on Monday and provides advice. On Sunday, a cabinet delegation and experts from the RIVM discussed the corona approach informally at the Catshuis, the prime minister’s official residence.

At the moment, the most positive tests are conducted in the large cities and surrounding areas, at several hundred a day. The cabinet is very concerned about the alarming corona figures.

Regional measures were therefore already taken last week scaled up.

For the time being, the cabinet is hesitant about tougher, national measures. “There is a price to that,” said Rutte last Friday during a press conference about the latest measures. “The price of restricting people’s freedoms. The second price is that it always has consequences for the economy.”

Yet that is what some mayors, such as Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam, advocate. “The map of the Netherlands is now so red that I no longer speak of regional but national infections”, said Aboutaleb recently opposed RTV Rijnmond.

Rutte does not rule out anything, he said. Stricter measures may be “necessary” if infections continue to develop rapidly, hospitals are at risk of becoming overburdened and regular care will be compromised as a result. “How long can you postpone cancer surgery?” Said the prime minister.
