The cabinet is considering reversing some relaxations today. For example, plans are being made to cancel multi-day events and to close clubs and discos, according to sources around the cabinet.

The sudden pessimism is driven by the rapidly increasing number of positive tests. RIVM reported 5475 new positive tests yesterday, the fastest increase in times. It is the highest number since May 14. On Wednesday, RIVM reported more than 3600 new cases, the day before more than 2200 positive tests were registered.

The rising number of infections does not have to have direct consequences for the pressure on healthcare. Unlike last year around the summer, more than 17 million shots have now been taken and a large number of people have been infected.

The increase in infections is therefore not yet reflected in the hospital figures. There are currently 196 corona patients there, for the first time since September 2020 that number is below the limit of 200. There are now 106 patients on nursing wards, 90 people on the ICs, also the lowest number since September last year.

Still, there are concerns that the high infection rates have consequences for holidaymakers. If our country turns ‘red’ according to the rules of the European Disease Control Center ECDC, that could mean restrictions. Countries can impose a quarantine obligation for people from the Netherlands, or even refuse them.

Van Dissel also argued that politicians should make uniform agreements in Europe about how a country’s ‘code red’ is interpreted and what the consequences are. For example, if a country does not measure an increase in pressure on hospitals, additional measures for holidaymakers may not always be necessary.
